Inspired by a piece of hand painted fabric that when viewed horizontally I thought looked like the ocean and the sky.
The sails and the sailboat were drawn on white fabric, accented with fabric paint and stitched onto the background using raw edge machine applique. The figure on the boat looks more like a pelican than a person, hence the name. I quilted the piece on my domestic machine and attached the quilt sandwich to a wooden painting panel using an acid free gel medium. The “frame” texture was created with modeling paste and painted with acrylic paint. The entire piece was sprayed with a fine art varnish to protect it from dust and fading.
